Navarro College Adult Education Transition Coordinator

A person from a poorly educated family is ten times as likely to have poor skills and twice as likely to live in poverty or be in jail. These facts are the result of people not getting an education. It results in lower level jobs, lower pay and many other problems that can not be fixed easily. Even knowing these facts, one in three young adults drop out of high school. Even in Waxahachie. Yes, even here almost half of the students are on some sort of meal program because parents can not afford to pay for school meals.

Kelly Meeks at Navarro College heads up a program to help educate many of those who fell out of the system for some reason and did not graduate. The GED program provides a high school equivalency certification. There are five classes running in Waxahachie and each has about 100 students. The program teaches science, math, social studies and critical thinking so necessary in 2016.

To qualify a person must be a Texas resident and meet some criteria showing withdrawal from school and other factors. Specifics are available from Ms. Meeks.

There is also an ESL (English as Second Language) class for needing training in English. Spanish and Vietnamese are the most frequent students.

The program is seeking mentors, business advisors, opportunities for on –the-job training and apprenticeship or internship opportunities from the business community.
