Jon McLaughlin, Executive Director of the Waxahachie YMCA and a Rotarian, explained some of the Y’s history and benefits to the city to his fellow Rotarians. The earliest Y’s in the 1850’s were started to address social and spiritual needs of people in their areas. Some of these needs included a safe place for travelers to stay, Bible study and prayer and free schools.

Addressing the social and spiritual needs of the community are still the missions of YMCAs today. Each year many children participate in Y programs where quality care, physical activity, character development, education and fun are the focus. Healthy Kids Day is held in Getzendanner Park to help kids understand a healthy life style and have fun. TheY’s Partners Campaign insures that no child will be left out because of money.

There are also many programs for adults so they may also lead a healthy life style.

The Y has partnered in the Miracle League of Ellis County. This project will provide ball fields and playgrounds for special needs kids in this area. This will allow them to participate just like all the other kids in town. To find out how you can help or participate contact Mr. McLaughlin at the Y.
