WISD Superintendent and Rotarian Dr. Jeremy Glenn along with Lee Auvenshine, Deputy Superintendent of Human Resources and Legal Servicesand Rotarian and Assistant Superintendent of Facilities Clyde Melick visited the Rotary Club to describe the upcoming bond election. Early voting is from October 23 to October 30 so time is short. Election day is November 7.

Dr. Glenn began by reminding everyone that the school district is successfully leading our students toward the future. They will have earned about 4,000 dual credit college courses by graduation. The district has received twenty-three academic distinctions, the most in Ellis County and among the highest in North Texas. In addition, the WISD teachers are among the best-paid in the county. Dr. Glenn and his staff are conservative stewards of the trust placed with them.

Mr. Melick explained the progress of the 2015 bond issue which is building the new high school. The project is 58% complete with many systems installed and functional. It is on time and under budget. The WISD web page provides information about tours you can take.

Next Lee Auvenshine explained the two part bond proposition. Proposition A totaling $65 million includes two new elementary schools, major renovation of Northside school and a new agriscience facility and project center. Proposition B is $13 million for a natatorium.

New elementary number 9 will be in North Grove opening 2019 or 2020 with a capacity of 550 students. Elementary number 10 will be built when enrollment hits 4,421 students and is expected to open in the 2022 to 2023 timeframe, also with a capacity of 550 students. The Northside renovations are necessary because the school was built in 1955 and needs a science lab and more classrooms to bring it up to 550 students. The agriscience facility will provide classrooms and space for the students to raise their animals for school projects.

Students now use the SAGU swimming pool which has limited capacity and limited availability. The new natatorium will house all types of swimming and diving competition and will be open to the public. The city will provide $100,000 each year for operating costs.
