Waxahachie High School Students of the Month

Rotarian Clyde Melick had the pleasure of introducing Waxahachie High School principal, Dr. Al Benskin, as a special guest. Each month Rotary honors an outstanding student from each of our public high schools as Student of the Month. Dr. Benskin had the honor of introducing the WHS Student of the Month Awards for November and December 2016 to seniors Abbey Melick and Morgan Cooper.

Abbey, the daughter of Clyde and Chrisanna Melick, is involved in many different clubs and organizations at WHS. She is well deserving of this special honor, as she is a leader and an officer in most of the clubs she is active in. Being ranked in the top 2% of her class, Waxahachie High School and its staff are very proud of Abbey’s accomplishments throughout her high school career. Abbey excels in leadership abilities, as she serves as the senior class President, national honors society Vice President and the Interact Secretary.

In addition to her academic and leadership excellence, Abbey was voted Home Coming Queen by her piers. As a member of the Indian Band Abbey has gone to the state marching band contest twice and her senior year she had the privilege of being the low reed section leader. In her free time, Abbey enjoys reading, studying and playing with her dogs.

Abbey was privileged to go on the Rotary heart of service trip to Nicaragua in 2016. Because of this trip, Abbey was inspired to pursue a career in international government. After high school she plans to attend the University of Texas where she will double major in government and international relations with a minor in Latin American studies.

Additionally, Dr. Benskin had the honor of awarding the WHS Student of the Month Award for December 2016 to senior Morgan Cooper, the daughter of Sandy Cooper. She is well deserving of this special honor, as she is an excellent student and very active in extra curricular activities. Waxahachie High School and its staff are very proud of Morgan’s accomplishments throughout her high school career. .

Since the sixth grade Morgan has been a part of the WISD band program. As a result, Morgan is a two time state qualifier on bassoon. She was, also, featured in a duet in The Spirit of Waxahachie Marching Band show, "Queen for a Day."　

In addition to band, Morgan is President of the Waxahachie HOSA Future Health Professionals chapter at the high school. She has placed first in her area in Medical Reading and is advancing to the state competition. For the past three years Morgan has been active in the Interact Club. She is a member of Student Council and the student Newspaper/Yearbook organization at WHS.

Morgan will be attending Texas A&M University in College Station in the fall of 2017 where she will be majoring in Biochemistry. In the future, Morgan plans to attend medical school. She hopes to make medicine her lifetime career.

It is an honor for Rotary to acknowledge such outstanding students as Morgan Cooper and Abbey Melick. They were presented a plague with their names engraved on it which will hang in the halls of Waxahachie High School for many years to come.
